Share of energy from renewable energy sources in the European Union
The share of energy from renewable sources in gross final energy consumption, gross electricity consumption, heating and cooling and transport has grown significantly in the European Union since 2005. But the 2030 targets of 42.5 % RES in gross final energy consumption and 29 % in transport energy seem quite far away. There have to be stronger efforts to increase the usage of renewable energy sources as well as to decrease enery demand, especially in the heating and cooling sector as well as in the traffic sector. Both is necessary to achieve European climate targets as well as to get more independant from energy imports. Binding EU climate and energy targets are important for national policies in member countries.
