Electricity generation in the EU (graphic dossier)

The amount of electricity from renewable energy sources has doubled since 2010, providing 48 % of total power generation in 2025
Renewable energy provided 1,331 billion kilowatt-hours or nearly half of total power generation in the European Union in 2025 (48 %). For the first time in history wind and solar produced more electricity than fossil fuels. Unusual weather conditions with very few wind meant that 2025 was a year with low wind power production but on the other hand new photovoltaic installations and sunny weather conditions lead to a record growth in solar power generation. The amount of solar power grew by 20 percent compared to the previous year. Within the fossil fuel sector there was a shift from coal to gas.
