Renewable share of electricity, heat and fuel consumption

The rise of renewables continued in Germany's power sector in 2014, while the untapped potential in the heating and transport sectors remains huge...

On average, renewable energies have steadily gained market share in Germany. Recent increases, however, were exclusively driven by the electricity market, where the share of renewable power reached 27.8 percent in 2014. This development was driven, above all, by new installations of wind, solar and biomass power as well as by the phase out of nuclear energy.

The other branches of the renewable energy sector were less buoyant. The share of renewable energies in the heating sector remained mostly static in recent years and was at 9.9 percent in 2014. Meanwhile, the contribution of biofuels to the overall fuel supply declined clearly and fell to a share of 5.4 percent.

Overall, renewable energies reached a share of 12.4 percent on the whole energy consumption of Germany in 2013.
